Marine Communications Officers
Marine Communications and Traffic Services has a long and rich history which few people recognize, including many of our own people.

It all began with the first transatlantic wireless signal transmitted from Poldhu, England, and received at Signal Hill in St. John's, NL, on December 12 1901. This was soon followed by the construction of the first coast radio stations in 1904 by the Canadian Marconi Company. Next came the Department of Transport's takeover in 1954; then the split from Air Services in 1979; and finally, with the amalgamation of Coast Guard radio stations with Vessel Traffic Services Centres in 1995.

We invite all those that currently work or have worked in marine radio stations, aeronautical stations, weather stations (until 1979), vessel traffic services, CCG vessels, weather ships and MCTS Centres to participate and help us record our history.

Station Listings

The following listing includes marine radio stations, combined air-marine stations, weather stations and VTS Centres on which radio operators/marine traffic regulators/MCTS officers have worked throughout the years.

We have attempted to list the stations with their original administrative region. However, some stations may have changed hands since then. For example, Iqaluit (formerly Frobisher Bay) was once under the control of the Québec (Laurentian) region but now reports to the Central and Arctic region. Similarly, Inuvik was once a member of the Pacific region, but also now reports to the Central and Arctic Region.
