The original station of Stephenville was built in the 1940's and was originally located in Cornerbrook and opened under the emblem of Canadian Marconi. At that time, the station call sign was 'VOJH'. The station was transferred to the Department of Transport sometime in the 1950's.

In 1974, the station was relocated to Stephenville, where it was combined with the Air Services to become a Marine/Aeradio station using the call sign VOJ. In November 1980, however, a more dedicated marine service was called for. As a result, Stephenville CGRS evolved and was established in a reconditioned USAF building in the core of Stephenville.

On July 19, 1990, the CGRS moved again for a third relocation in its 45-year history. With the construction of the CCG Base at Port Harmon, all Coast Guard services in Stephenville were brought under one roof.

The station was operating VHF and MF facilities on R/T and MF on C/W.

In June of 1999, Stephenville CGRS was relocated to Port aux Basques. All remote sites formerly controlled from Stephenville are now controlled from Port aux Basques.
